Gameplay revolves around hacking away dirt with the pick-axe to explore the mine, find treasure, and gather equipment needed to progress. However, these gadgets come with requirements like water, which can be refilled at designated reserves within the mine. Other challenges include traps, enemies, switch puzzles, platforming sequences, and navigating rocky terrain, where removing dirt under rocks triggers gravity.

As Rusty collects precious metals or gems, they must be sold on the surface to earn money, which is then used to purchase upgrades or equipment like dynamite for combat, ladders for traversal, or lanterns for lighting. Some upgrades come with an energy cost that can be obtained by scavenging within the mine. If Rusty falls, the people on the surface will repair him for a fee.
