Streets of Rage , Sega's answer to Final Fight, follows the story of three young police officers - Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, and Blaze Fielding - in a city controlled by a criminal syndicate led by "Mr. X". Crime is rampant, leading the three heroes to make a pact to leave the force and topple the syndicate on their own.
Gameplay is straightforward and simple, using three buttons: one to jump, another to attack, and a third for a range attack from a support police car. Each character has a limited set of moves, including punching, kicking, back attacks, grapple moves, flying attacks, and special abilities like Adam's jumping ability or Axel's speed.
Levels are in typical arcade side-scroller fashion: move from left to right, clearing screens from enemies one after another as fast as possible while avoiding damage with a boss at the end. Some levels feature "death drops" where players must avoid falling, throwing enemies into spiked surfaces, including an elevator level. Various items are scattered on the ground, such as melee weapons, bonus points, and health-restoring apples and turkeys.
