Brutal: Paws of Fury , released for the Super Famicom in 1994, is an action and adventure game that pits you against various animals in a martial arts contest. The Dalai Llama has organized this event to prove their skills, and as the contestant, you'll face off against furry creatures of all species, including the Dalai Llama himself.
The gameplay involves one-on-one fighting across different levels with mostly outdoor terrain. You can choose from a variety of characters, each with unique abilities. Throughout the game, your character travels across the island, battling opponents in duels before reaching the final showdown. Each battle consists of multiple rounds, which can be customized in the options menu.
During a duel, you can punch and kick your opponent, use special attacks, or employ a "taunt" to restore some health. The first combatant to win the set number of rounds wins the fight. If you lose, the game ends, but you can continue with a continue option. On the other hand, if you emerge victorious, you progress to the next opponent and get to watch an ending animation specific to the chosen character.
The game also allows for single-duel matches against computer-controlled opponents or human players. You can choose from various terrains and opponents, adding to the game's replay value.
Visually, the game takes a more cartoonish approach, deviating from the gory tone of some other fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Rise of the Robots. This lighthearted style sets Brutal: Paws of Fury apart from its competitors.
In console versions, special moves are unlocked after each successful three-bout win, but this feature is not present in computer versions.
