The future is marked by military forces relying heavily on massive mech robots called Wanzers for combat at Huffman Island, a disputed territory in the Pacific Ocean. At the center of this conflict are the USN and OCU, who clash over ownership of the island. A covert mission by OCU forces, led by soldier Roid, goes awry when they're ambushed by USN forces under Commander Driscoll, resulting in the death of Roid's fiancée Karen and a devastating attack on the USN facility.

One year later, the war rages on, with Huffman Island under OCU control but struggling to defend against USN attacks. Roid, once a disgraced soldier, now fights as a gladiator in the Wanzer arena before being recruited by Colonel Olson for his mercenary unit, Carrion Crow. Convinced that Driscoll is still hiding on the island, Roid agrees to take command of the unit.

Front Mission is a turn-based strategy RPG played from an isometric perspective. Players progress through large strategic battles involving multiple units and cutscenes between them. Towns are also visited, allowing players to interact with locals, purchase new gear at shops, or engage in conversations. In combat, each Wanzer robot is a separate unit, equipped with various weapons and attack styles that can be upgraded as they gain experience points.
