Shanghai III, an action-adventure game for the Super Famicom console, has twelve rounds inspired by the Chinese zodiac animals. The objective of the game is to achieve a high score of 10K points within a limited time frame without using continues. Players can use a limited number of Helps to get hints on what pieces to choose next and a limited number of Peeps to see what tiles are under the top ones.

Players must strategically make matches in quick succession to earn extra time, while trying to complete all twelve rounds successfully to unlock a bonus stage. In this final stage, players can earn additional points, helps, and peeps to enhance their overall score.
