Champions Forever Boxing , released for the TurboGrafx-16 console, is a boxing game based on the 1989 documentary of the same name. Players can choose to control legendary boxers like Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Holmes, and Norton, or test their skills against these icons in the ring. The game features various modes, including single-player exhibition, career mode, a two-player versus mode, and an auto-play mode with AI-controlled boxers. Career mode spans from 1968 to 1983, with one fight per year, taking into account historical boxing standings. In this mode, fights last 12 rounds, while other modes allow for 3-12 rounds.
Fights are displayed from the side of the ring, and players can use five different punches: a jab (Button II), left and right hooks (button I + direction buttons), body blows (button I + direction buttons), uppercuts (button I + direction buttons), and block attacks (Run or Run + Down). Clinching is possible when in close proximity, and taunting the opponent with a showboating move can be done.
The game tracks strength and stamina meters, which decrease when punches are thrown or the opponent lands a blow. When strength is depleted, players must button-mash to get back up, with increasing difficulty each time.
Rounds last 3 minutes, during which time the corner screen appears for 30 seconds, displaying judges' scores, statistics, and damage visualization. Players can regain strength or stamina or boost punch power during this period.
Progress in career mode is stored through passwords or backup memory on a TurboGrafx-CD or with a TurboBooster-Plus.
