The story takes place in the fantasy world of Thedas, where a civil war is brewing in the country of Orlais. The player's character enters the game world from the Fade, a breach to another dimension caused by an explosion at a peace conference between mages and templars. The character discovers powers that can close rifts, known as the Herald of Andraste, and must find a way to stop those behind it with the help of former associates of the Divine.
The gameplay revolves around closing rifts and bringing those responsible to justice. Players can customize their character's appearance, sex, class, and race, and recruit a party of four to travel to different regions. The game features a war table as the main hub for quests, where players can define allegiances and pursue romances. The War Council consists of advisers who can be assigned tasks to complete on their own to progress.
The gameplay allows for both action RPG combat and tactical approaches, with multiple difficulty levels and details for enemies shown. Players can also guide the abilities of their party members through skill trees and manage their equipment through an inventory. Additionally, multiplayer is available for up to four players, working cooperatively with quests separate from the single-player game.
A new feature in the series is the introduction of optional micropayments to speed up progress, allowing players to acquire Platinum currency and unlock or crafted items without transferring them between game modes.
