The 2008 release of NHL 09 for the Xbox 360 brings new features to the EA Sports ice hockey simulation. The game includes updated rosters, schedules, and the addition of the Russian Elite League. A new mode called "Be A Pro" allows players to create a new player and control them on the field, also available in multiplayer with up to 12 players.
Defensive stick control has been improved, allowing for example, direct pass prevention. Players can now control both the puck and stick with one hand in the offensive, enabling better play against goalies. However, this adds complexity to the controls, which can now be switched from the old NHL '94 mode using only a few buttons and one analog stick.
