Alekhine's Gun is a stealth game and the spiritual successor to the Death to Spies series . The protagonist, KGB colonel Semyon Strogov, now operating under the codename Agent Alekhine, prepares to commit suicide on November 22nd, 1963, after his wife and daughter were killed that day. From his time in the KGB during World War II, he became an agent working for the CIA and the first mission is a flashback to an infiltration in Bergen in September 1943.
Each mission offers a large location to be tackled in various ways. At the start of the game, there are objectives that can be completed in any order. The player must figure out the different ways to approach each situation without additional clues or help. Before each mission, a loadout can be defined with a combat knife, chloroform, and other weapons that can also be upgraded.
A typical mission requires scouting the environment first and taking out someone to get their uniform or credentials. This can lead to a complete alarm if suspicion is raised, but it's possible to approach the game as a shooter, or 'ghost' a level by killing as few people as possible and avoiding detection. The player must use items in the environment, such as cover, to stay undetected.
There are awareness meters and instinct meters that highlight suspicious individuals and potential solutions. The player can use various methods to avoid detection, such as studying patterns or taking advantage of uniforms or passes. The game features multiple approaches to solving problems and four difficulty levels that influence the AI.
Alekhine's Gun is available on Xbox One and was released on February 9th, 2016.
