Ultimate Soccer is a football game that features 64 international teams, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. The gameplay offers five different modes: friendly matches, penalty shootouts, tournaments, playoffs, and leagues. However, since there's no password or built-in battery, players must complete all the modes in one sitting.
The game allows for customization of the physics engine to suit individual player preferences. Players can tweak settings such as wind strength, ball weight, ball control tightness, and player speed to influence the gameplay. A five-a-side mode is also included, where the ball is never out of play. This flexibility enables players to create complex plays, from short passes to long-range shots.
The game's graphics are similar to those found in EA's Madden NFL series, with pseudo-3D effects that allow for a bird's-eye view of the field.
Ultimate Soccer was released on the Sega Game Gear in 1993 and has since been followed by other games in the same series, including Striker on the same console and Striker'96 on PC, Saturn, and PlayStation.
