The follow-up to Gauntlet: Legends, Gauntlet Dark Legacy is a port of the arcade game, bringing a new installment to the long-running Gauntlet series of hack-and-slash action games. As with all the Gauntlet games, you play a medieval fantasy character who fights their way through hordes of evil creatures on a quest for gold and perhaps an eventual goal.
The game features eight characters to initially choose from: the Warrior, Valkyrie, Archer, Wizard, Sorceress, Knight, Dwarf, and Jester. Each character looks and plays differently, with additional alternative modes and secret characters to unlock. A multi-tap allows up to four players to play together, with rules governing how much they can hurt each other.
The levels take place in various terrain, from forests to mountains to volcanic plains, featuring familiar monsters as well as some new ones. The camera angle varies depending on the location, and the lands, creatures, and heroes are all rendered in 3D. While the graphics have been upgraded, the gameplay is very similar to the originals.
As you run through levels, hacking at unlimited armies of monsters, searching for gold, keys, and health-giving food, bosses and scripted events slow down the repetitious nature of the game. With some RPG trappings, Gauntlet Dark Legacy is an action game that should not be confused with true RPGs.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy was released for the Nintendo Gamecube on 06 March 2002 and features eight characters from the previous games, plus new ones, in a quest to fight through hordes of evil creatures.
