Battlefield 3 is the direct sequel to Battlefield 2 and is the 11th overall entry in the Battlefield franchise. Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, this game aims to provide fast-paced, team-oriented online multiplayer while also offering a first true single-player campaign and cooperative mode. The game introduces the Battlelog feature, an in-browser service that provides detailed statistics for individual soldiers.
The campaign takes place in 2014, with players taking on the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn and his squad as they unravel a mysterious attack on New York. The story is presented in a disjointed, flashback fashion, with Blackburn being interrogated about his knowledge of the PLR - a terrorist organization after chemical and nuclear weapons. The multiplayer suite features Conquest, Rush, Team Deathmatch, and Squad-based variations. Players can choose from multiple classes, each with unique abilities and gadgets. The Assault class uses assault rifles, while the Support class uses light machine guns; the Engineer class uses sub-machine guns, and the Recon class carries long-range rifles. Classes can unlock new gadgets and specializations, as well as weapon-specific items.
The game also features a variety of vehicles, including tanks, IFVs, Armored personnel carriers, and helicopters. The PC version requires Windows Vista or Windows 7, while console editions support smaller maps and lower player counts.
