Battlefield 3 is the direct sequel to Battlefield 2 and is the 11th overall entry in the Battlefield franchise. Powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, Battlefield 3 aims to provide fast-paced, team-oriented online multiplayer while also providing a single player campaign and cooperative mode for the first time. The game introduces the Battlelog feature, an in-browser service that provides statistics for individual soldiers, including their win/loss ratio, favorite weapon, and accuracy.
The campaign is set in 2014, where players take on the role of Staff Sergeant Henry Blackburn and his 5-man squad. The story unfolds as Blackburn recounts his encounter with the PLR, a terrorist organization that may be after chemical and nuclear weapons. The campaign plays like most other shooters, using various weapons to dispatch enemies and push towards each scenario.
The multiplayer suite contains Conquest, Rush, Team Deathmatch, and a Squad-based variation of Rush and Deathmatch. Players can choose from multiple classes, including Assault, Support, Engineer, and Recon. Each class has unlockable gadgets and specializations, as well as an unlock tree for weapons and vehicles.
Console editions of the game support smaller maps and fewer players, with a maximum of 24 players online. The PC version requires Windows Vista or Windows 7, with DirectX 10 or 11 required to run.
