Travel through time along with Ecco the Dolphin , in a game that lets you experience what it's like to be a dolphin. You can do many things a real dolphin does, including eating fish and jumping out of the water. The storyline is more complex than it initially seems. As Ecco, you're the only dolphin who escaped from a giant whirlpool that took your entire pod. The five shining stars on your forehead show that you're chosen to save them. Your journey will take you through time and space using an Atlantean time machine, where you'll meet the mystical Asterite to defeat the Vortex Queen.
The main part of the gameplay in Ecco the Dolphin involves exploring various aquatic levels. These levels are usually non-linear, with submerged caverns and tunnels branching out from the main bodies of water. Navigating through these levels is challenging due to obstacles like islands that must be hopped over, volcanoes that spit hot lava, strong currents, deadly spikes, and predators like octopi and giant eels.
The sonar ability in Ecco the Dolphin has multiple functions: it allows you to communicate with friendly animals, map out your surroundings (using echolocation), activate glyphs, and even defeat enemies. Activating glyphs is necessary because they can unlock hidden parts of the current level, including the exit that leads to the next area. Some glyphs can give Ecco invincibility for a limited time.
You must keep an eye on Ecco's life and breath meters. Dolphins can't stay underwater for too long and need to surface for air. The cavern systems may have hidden pockets of air, but you still need to return to the surface regularly. Every time Ecco is hit by spikes, lava, or enemies, they lose health. If their health reaches zero, you'll have to replay the level from the start.
Ecco's life meter can be replenished by eating fish or finding healing clams called the Shelled Ones. You can avoid most enemies, but Ecco can also kill troublesome creatures using the death sonar or charging them head-on.
