For Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders , Zak McKracken, a tabloid reporter, discovers that space aliens are using the telephone system to dumbify the public. With the help of friends Annie, Melissa, and Leslie, Zak must stop this menace and save the Earth.
The gameplay involves third-person puzzle-solving, similar to Maniac Mansion. The player chooses verb commands (Open, Pick Up, Give, etc.) to interact with the game world. Multiple protagonists can be controlled, allowing for character switching and inventory item exchange in the same location. The adventure takes the heroes globe-trotting, visiting exotic countries and even leaving Earth to complete it. Puzzles have optional solutions or multiple ways to solve them.
The Commodore 64 version features impressive graphics with up to 256 colors. Music and sound effects are also of high quality for its time.
The Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders release on GOG includes two versions of the game: a revamped FM Towns version with updated graphics, and an original Floppy version from the DOS era.
