Metal Slug 5 is set in a world where a paramilitary syndicate known as the "Ptolemaic Army" has stolen top-secret data from a research installation that was developing the next-gen of Metal Slugs . The soldiers Marco, Tarma, Eri and Fio are tasked with recovering the disk and putting an end to the syndicate's evil plans.

The gameplay in Metal Slug 5 is a fast-paced shoot'em up experience where you'll face a new group of enemies from the Ptolemaic Army. You'll also have access to three returning guns - Big Rocket, Big Laser and Big Shotgun - as well as two vehicles - Slug Sub and Slug Plane - from previous games. Additionally, three brand new vehicles - Spider Slug, Slug Gunner and Slug Car - are introduced, adding to the game's variety.

One of the key new features in Metal Slug 5 is a sliding move. By pressing the B button when ducking, your character will slide across the ground for a short time, allowing you to avoid enemy attacks. During this time, you can still fire your gun normally but cannot throw grenades.

Metal Slug 5 was released on July 28, 2005, for the Xbox console.
