The Axe is back... with twice the force and twice the fury of 1989's "Videogame of the Year"! This time it's brother against brother locked in deadly combat. Your older brother has summoned unspeakable forces of evil to take control of the kingdom. Treachery rules! Your only hope is the legendary royal sword! But will its power be enough to overcome the Cliffs of Chaos? The Skull Dungeons? And the treacherous Crypts of Slime? Only your courage, your fighting skill, and the Legendary Axe can answer! This game has you fighting monsters through seven stages with just a sword, but three other weapons can be picked up along the way, and include axes, chain spears, and smart bombs. These weapons can only be obtained by collecting the power-up that a defeated enemy leaves behind. Weapons can be switched along the way. At the end of each level, you must defeat a huge boss in order to go to the next stage.

Story
The Fall of the Demon King
The Demon King Drodam, who ruled this world through darkness and evil, was defeated by the hero Braise. The evil and darkness vanished, and at the people's urging, Braise became king. The world had once again returned to peace.
The Royal Succession Crisis
Having become king, Braise married Grace, his childhood friend whom he had rescued from Demon King Drodam. Their happiness continued for a long time, alongside the peace of the world.
Time flowed along with their happiness, and the country's prosperity continued. However, King Braise, who had ruled justly, was suddenly struck by death. Queen Grace followed him into the afterlife, plunging the people into sorrow.
The Bitter Struggle
Amid their cries of agony, the people desired a new king, and the issue of succession arose for the remaining princes. A bitter struggle between brothers began involving two princes:

The eldest, Prince Zark

The youngest, Prince Sirius
To win this struggle, the eldest Prince Zark fell to the ways of evil. He resurrected the ruler of darkness and evil, Demon King Drodam.
The Rise of Darkness
Using the power of Drodam, Prince Zark achieved victory and took the throne. The world once again began to be dominated by magic and darkness. The royal palace, which had been a symbol of peace, became a land of darkness where demons dwelled.
The Counterattack
Prince Celsus, who had once been defeated in battle, managed to make a comeback by obtaining the legendary king's sword. He broke through the demons and decided to mount a counterattack against King Zark.
Prince Celsus stood before the gate that had turned into a palace of darkness. And now, the curtain rises on a new legend.
