Game Arts Co., Ltd. is a Tokyo-based developer and publisher established by Yoichi Miyaji. The company gained early prominence with the sci-fi action game Thexder and went on to produce critically acclaimed role-playing game franchises such as Lunar and Grandia.
Founded in 1985, the studio initially focused on personal computer software before expanding into the home console market. Following the success of the transformable-mecha shooter
Thexder in 1985 and its subsequent 1986 ports, the developer collaborated on high-profile ports and original properties. In 1988, the company developed the Sega Mark III port of the action role-playing game
Ys.
The developer expanded its role-playing game portfolio with
Faria, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in Japan in 1989 and in North America in 1991. In 1992, the studio collaborated with Gainax to release the side-scrolling action game
Alisia Dragoon for the Sega Genesis, which received praise for its multi-directional combat and companion system. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the studio maintained a strong relationship with Sega, contributing to the Sega CD and Saturn libraries, before eventually becoming a subsidiary of GungHo Online Entertainment in 2005.
