Idea Factory was established in October 1994 by former Compile employees. The company is highly recognized for its niche role-playing game series, including Spectral Force and Generation of Chaos. In later years, they expanded by forming subsidiaries such as Compile Heart to develop further RPG titles.
During its formative years, the developer focused on creating tactical and simulation role-playing games for home consoles, particularly the PlayStation. The studio's early portfolio includes the release of
Spectral Tower (1996) and
Spectral Force [Limited Edition] (1997), which helped define its signature fantasy settings. This was followed by
Legend (1998) and the simulation title
Monster Complete World (1999).
As the company consolidated its early franchises, it published
Spectral Force [Idea Factory Collection] (1999) and the spin-off
Spectral Blade (1999). Entering the new millennium, the developer sustained its output with
Blade (2000) and
Spectral Force 2 [Idea Factory Collection] (2000). These releases established a dedicated cult following, characterized by interconnected lore across different game series. Over the decades, the developer transitioned from local Japanese publishing to global distribution, establishing international branches to localize its extensive catalog of strategy and visual novel titles for Western audiences.
