Imagineer Co., Ltd. is a Japanese entertainment company established in Tokyo. The company gained prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s by publishing and localizing popular Western titles like SimCity, Populous, and Elite for the Japanese market. They also developed and published original software for various Nintendo and Sega platforms.
The company expanded its early catalog by bringing prominent action-role-playing and simulation games to Japanese home consoles. In 1988, they published the Famicom port of
Ys, followed by the localization of the side-scrolling action-adventure
Battle of Olympus in 1989. Their portfolio grew to encompass diverse genres, including sports and strategy. They handled the Japanese console releases of the soccer game
Super Kick Off in 1991, alongside major simulation and strategy titles such as
Populous in 1990, and both
Elite and
SimCity in 1991.
Beyond these early releases, the publisher established long-running proprietary franchises. Most notably, they created the
Medarot series, known internationally as
Medabots, in 1997, which spawned numerous sequels, anime adaptations, and merchandise. In the mobile and modern console eras, they transitioned toward lifestyle and utility software, achieving global success with the
Fitness Boxing series on the Nintendo Switch. Through strategic licensing and original intellectual properties, the publisher maintained a continuous presence in the gaming industry across multiple console generations.
