Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss is a role-playing game that follows the Avatar as he returns to Britannia, haunted by ghostly dreams. He soon discovers that Baron Almric's daughter has been kidnapped and must navigate the Great Stygian Abyss to find her or rot in the dungeon. Along the way, he encounters various inhabitants of the dungeon, survivors of a failed colony, and uncovers secrets behind the kidnapping.
Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss is considered one of the first role-playing games with fluid first-person movement in a real 3D environment. The player can move freely, look up and down, jump, and swim, and experience a dynamic environment with varying terrain, including slopes, stairs, bridges, underground rivers, and more.
The game's combat system is action-oriented, requiring the player to draw their weapon, aim, and hold the cursor over the screen to inflict damage. The length of time the cursor is held determines the attack strength, with different types of attacks depending on the cursor position. Players can also choose their character's class, skills, and abilities at the beginning of the game.
Skills include weapon proficiencies, lockpicking, bartering, and others, which can be increased by reciting mantras at special shrines. The magic system uses runes that can be combined to produce magical effects. Conversations with non-playable characters are possible, and players can make choices regarding the Avatar's behavior towards them.
The game features a non-linear progression, allowing players to explore most of the Abyss in any order, while completing specific tasks for the story to progress. An auto-map displays previously explored locations and allows players to note their findings.
