The eighth installment of the The King of Fighters 2001 series sees ten different teams battling across several countries to claim the title of this year's King of Fighters. However, the NESTS organization is once again a major obstacle; they have deployed their own team of four fighters, led by two high-ranking individuals within NESTS: one claiming to be the original Zero and Igniz, the CEO of NESTS.
The character roster has been updated for this release in the series. The new characters include May Lee, Angel, K9999, Original Zero, and Igniz, joining returning fighters such as Heidern and Goro Daimon. In total, there are 40 normal characters and 2 boss characters to choose from.
