The King of Fighters 2001 is the eighth installment in the King of Fighters series . Ten different teams from around the world compete in several countries to determine which team will be crowned this year's King of Fighters. However, the NESTS organization is once again interfering with the tournament, deploying their own team of four fighters led by two high-ranking individuals: a man claiming to be the original Zero and Igniz, the CEO of NESTS.
The character roster has been updated for this release in the series. With new characters such as May Lee, Angel, K9999, Original Zero, and Igniz joining returning fighters like Heidern and Goro Daimon, King of Fighters 2001 features 40 normal characters and 2 boss characters to choose from.
The gameplay in King of Fighters 2001 remains largely unchanged from its predecessor, with the exception of the striker system. This system allows for full customization of the number of strikers and fighters on a team, as well as changes to Power Stocks after each battle. The more characters assigned as strikers, the more power is available for special maneuvers and Desperation Moves.
