Space War for the Atari 2600 is an early home adaptation of the classic mainframe game Spacewar!. The cartridge includes two different game modes: Space War and Space Shuttle .
The story revolves around dueling spaceships in Space War , where players aim to shoot down each other's ships with missiles for a single point per kill. Each ship has limited fuel for its thrusters, which refills automatically when ammunition runs out, but only if the opponent is also out of shots.
The gameplay involves momentum preservation: once accelerated, the ship keeps flying in the same direction until its thrusters fire again. The game features seven variants, each with different options such as a solid or pass-through screen boundary, hyperspace, and the presence of a sun or starbase that affects gameplay.
In Space Shuttle , players aim to dock their ships at fast-moving space modules by matching speed and direction. The goal is to score points by successfully docking, with 10 different variants offering varying game modes, including one- or two-player options.
The games conclude after either a 10-minute timer expires or when a player reaches a score of 10.
