Stellar Track , a Star Trek game found on many college mainframes, was released in 1981 for the Atari 2600. The game has no graphics, only text, and is controlled using the joystick to select commands and press the red button. The game starts by choosing how many enemies you must kill in a certain number of stardates. You then use various commands and settings to navigate through the galaxy, interact with aliens and starbases, and repair your ship. The available commands include Galaxy Map , which shows a 6x6 grid of quadrants; LR Scan , which provides information about enemy locations; and SR Scan , which shows the stars, aliens, and starbases in your quadrant.
Warp is used to move between quadrants or sectors within a quadrant. You set two settings: direction and distance, using specific numbers to select both. Each quadrant has its own unique appearance, depending on whether you encounter enemies, starbases, or just stars. Other commands include Photon Torpedo , which can kill enemies with a single shot; Phasers , which can be used to blast enemies without needing direct line of sight; and Status , which shows your current resources and damage. If you dock at a starbase, you are repaired instantly.
Skill (Difficulty) switches allow you to adjust the difficulty level: one switch controls how easily you take damage, while the other affects phaser strength.
