Video Chess is an early home chess game released on the Atari 2600 in 1978. The standard U.S. chess rules are used in this game, where players can move pieces by placing an X on the board and pressing the red button to execute the move. If a move is illegal, the 2600 will give a warning sound instead of making the move.
The gameplay involves various maneuvers such as castling, en passant, and standard chess moves. To castle, players must move their king two squares in the direction of the rook, while en passant allows them to counteract an opponent's initial double move on an adjacent square by advancing their pawn to the fifth rank.
Video Chess features skill levels that determine how long the computer will think before making its move. These times range from 15 seconds for Level 1 to 10 hours for Level 7, with increasing difficulty and longer thinking times as players progress through the levels.
