Cyberball is an action-packed sports game that takes inspiration from American Football, but with a sci-fi twist. The story begins with a change to the sport's rules due to cheating by players using bionic parts. As a result, robots took over, and the game evolved into a high-stakes competition between two teams of seven robots. Instead of a pigskin ball, they use a 350-pound bomb that can be thrown and caught. The goal is to score points before the bomb reaches "critical" heat, at which point it explodes and possession is swapped.
Gameplay in Cyberball is similar to traditional American Football, but with some key differences. The game's version of "downs" has been replaced by a countdown timer that increases the bomb's heat towards "critical". If you reach critical, the bomb will explode and possession will be transferred. You can prevent this from happening by crossing the 50-yard line, losing possession, or scoring a touchdown, which resets the timer to "cool". Field goals and punts are not featured in the game, with the only kick being the initial kickoff.
Control in Cyberball is straightforward. The quarterback throws the bomb to the catcher as soon as it's released. The two-player game mode is co-operative, where one player passes and the other receives. This adds a new layer of strategy and teamwork to the game.
