Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a fast-paced side-scrolling platformer that takes speed to a whole new level. Set in different worlds called "zones", players must navigate through various environments with their own unique themes. Each zone features two Acts, and defeating the final machine controlled by Dr. Robotnik allows progress to be made. The evil doctor's ultimate plan is to conquer the world using his army of robot animals, known as Badniks, to build a powerful weapon called the Death Egg.
Players can collect rings scattered throughout levels, which not only earn extra lives but also provide protection from harm. If Sonic is injured while carrying rings, they will scatter and make him temporarily invincible. However, losing all rings results in a lost life. Players can access Special Stages by reaching designated points with 50 or more rings, where gathering a set amount of rings before checkpoints earns Chaos Emeralds.
A new feature in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is cooperative play with a friend. At any time, a second controller can be plugged in, allowing another player to take control of Tails and continue the game without interruption. The spin dash ability, which gives Sonic and Tails an initial boost of speed from standing still, is also a useful feature when navigating through challenging terrain.
The game includes 2-player versus mode, where players compete horizontally across levels inspired by three zones from the single-player campaign. Additionally, the mobile version features new levels in Hidden Palace Zone, boss attack modes, improved graphics, and faster frame rates, as well as a re-mastered soundtrack and Knuckles as an additional playable character.
