Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is a sequel to Luigi's Mansion , where Luigi visits Evershade Valley to retrieve the Dark Moon parts. The destruction of the Dark Moon has caused all ghosts to become hostile to humans, and it's up to Luigi to put an end to this chaos.
The gameplay involves using a vacuum device called PolterGust 5000 to fight against ghost enemies. The basic procedure is to stun the ghosts with a flashlight, then use the PolterGust to vacuum them in. However, ghosts can struggle against it, so Luigi must counter their movement with the analogue stick. Different types of enemies require different tactics, such as removing sunglasses or exploiting brief vulnerabilities.
The PolterGust 5000 is also used to solve puzzles, like sucking up a stove to ignite something else. Finding and collecting treasure can upgrade the PolterGust, which becomes more powerful over time. Besides the main campaign, there's a multiplayer mode in the ScareScraper mansion with 25 floors.
In the multiplayer mode, players can participate in three different game modes: hunter, rush, or polterpup. The goal is to suck up as many ghosts as possible, find the exit before time runs out, or track down invisible ghosts using the flashlight.
