NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC is a basketball game that follows the footsteps of NFL Blitz. It features the option to save personal records and a cheat code system operated by pressing a sequence of buttons. The game also includes unlock-able characters, such as NBA team mascots, and a special "On-Fire" option inspired by Midway's sports games. Players can perform unique moves like the alley-oop, spin move, and double dunk.
The game has undergone changes since its debut in 1999. The initial arcade version included rosters from the 1998-99 NBA season, as well as secret characters based on Universal Monsters. Later home console ports used updated rosters for the 1999-2000 season, without the Universal Monsters characters. An updated arcade version was released in 2000 with refreshed rosters, rebranded as NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC - Gold Edition .
