NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC is a descendant of the original NBA Jam , and is created by some of the key team members. The game follows in the footsteps of NFL Blitz, featuring the option to save personal records and a cheat code system operated by pressing a sequence of buttons. It also features unlock-able characters, including NBA team mascots, and the "On-Fire" option that defines Midway's sports games. Players are able to perform special moves such as the alley-oop, the spin move, and the double dunk. The game also features a Create-a-Player mode that allows custom players to have tweaked abilities by winning matches.

The story of NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC revolves around the 1998-99 NBA season, with rosters featuring real teams and players from that year. However, an arcade update was released in 2000 with refreshed rosters for the next season, as part of NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC - Gold Edition . The game's success led to a home console port release for the Sega Dreamcast in 1999.

Gameplay in NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC is centered around basketball, with fast-paced action and over-the-top moves. Players can choose from various teams and players, each with their own unique abilities and strengths. The game features a variety of modes, including arcade-style gameplay, a create-a-player mode, and a single-player campaign.

The Sega Dreamcast version of NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC was released in 1999-10-31 for the console.
