Yoshi's Story is loosely based on the Super Famicom/SNES game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. The game follows the adventures of six Yoshis as they search for the Super Happy Tree, which has been stolen by Baby Bowser. The tree was taken from a sunny forest, where the Yoshis live.
The gameplay is action-packed and features Yoshi's ability to walk, run, swim, leap, flutter, and fire his eggs. The game takes place in storybook "pages" made up of various textures, including paper forests, denim clouds, inflatable plastic islands, and colored spools.
The Nintendo 64 Yoshi's Story pioneers the use of the Rumble Pak as a key element of gameplay. Players can feel currents when Yoshi swims through oceanic depths and locate hidden objects by smelling something. The Rumble Pak also allows for subtle movements, such as floating on a leaf or riding a friendly dragon.
The game was released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64 console and falls under the Action & Adventure genre.
