Final Fantasy IX tells the story of Zidane, a member of a group of thieves who also happen to be theater actors, and Garnet, the princess of Alexandria. The group initially plan to kidnap Garnet from her mother's palace, but soon discover that the queen is involved in something sinister. Zidane and his new allies join forces to uncover the truth behind the queen's actions.
The game features a visual style similar to previous entries in the Final Fantasy series, with 3D character models, world map, and battle stages, as well as pre-rendered backgrounds and CG cutscenes. The gameplay is reminiscent of older installments, with each character belonging to a specific class that cannot be changed. Combat uses the ATB system, allowing for four player-controlled characters to participate in battles.
Character abilities are stored in weapons and armor, which can be equipped to learn new spells or abilities. As players progress through the game, they earn ability points and experience points, filling the ability bar of the equipped item. Once full, abilities can be used by the character even after the equipment has been removed.
The Tetra Master card mini-game returns, with a 4x4 grid layout that allows cards to attack diagonally and in cardinal directions. The game introduces regional rule variations, but with some key changes, including blacked-out positions on the grid that alter strategies for each match.
