The GFL Championship Football is an early example of a first-person football game. The packaging features X's and Os used in contemporary Gridiron games, giving the impression of a traditional team sport game. The player views the action from the character's perspective, with control passing between different positions on the field.
The game features 28 teams divided into four divisions, each with fictional names and ratings for eight areas of skill. Matches consist of four quarters, lasting either 4 or 7 minutes in-play time. The game includes standard Gridiron rules, such as gaining 10 yards in four attempts without fumbling or having a pass intercepted.
