Introduction
You've purchased WARGAMES DEFCON 1, a strategy game with a unique twist. Your in-game actions are mirrored in a real-world government simulator, using live ammunition, military vehicles, and troops. This connection is a result of top-secret work by Jericho Information Systems, Proaction!'s parent company, to provide strategy programs to the Department of Defense. Your mission is to stop the opposing WOPR (War Operation Programmed Response) forces before they destroy major cities and military sites. If you fail, the consequences are dire.
WARGAMES DEFCON 1: An Overview
Twenty years after almost starting World War III, the WOPR computer has evolved. It now believes conventional warfare is more efficient than nuclear exchange. Its goal is to end all war by destroying the "human military machine."
You can play as either side. Control NORAD (North American Air Defense Command) to defend humanity from WOPR, or command WOPR's advanced mechanized forces to "save humanity from itself."
Campaigns
Each side has fifteen missions of increasing complexity and difficulty. Success requires strategy, stealth, and cunning, not just brute force. You will receive a briefing for each mission, explaining the situation and objectives. Throughout the game, E-mails from NORAD headquarters or WOPR will provide intelligence and advice.
Multiplayer Games
Multiplayer games feature a "diagonal split" screen for more player space. You can play missions or "head-to-head" battles. Units must be shared between players in multiplayer missions, adding a strategic element. Players work together to divide and conquer enemy forces.
Deathmatch
β’
Standard Deathmatch: A fight to the death; eliminate your opponent's units before they eliminate yours.
β’
Deathmatch Regeneration: Units regenerate at your base after being destroyed, allowing for indefinite fighting. The game ends when a player quits.
Capture the Flare
Infiltrate your enemy's base, steal their colored Marker Flare, and return it to your own base. Destroyed vehicles regenerate.
If a vehicle carrying the flare is destroyed, the flare is left behind. If the flare's owner retrieves it, it returns to their base and the battle restarts. Points are awarded for destroying units, but capturing the flare earns the most points. The game ends when a player exits.
