The story of Army Men: Sarge's War takes place in a darker tone for the series, with Sergeant Hawk facing off against his most formidable foe yet: Lord Malice. Following years of conflict, the Green army has emerged victorious over the Tan forces. On the eve of the peace celebrations, a devastating attack wipes out Sarge's entire squad. Now, it's up to Sarge to exact revenge.

The gameplay in Army Men: Sarge's War is mainly focused on level-based, third-person shooting. Many weapons can also be used in first-person view, adding variety to the gameplay experience. The game features multiplayer options for two to four players on some platforms.
