Catz on the PlayStation 2 is a single-player simulation game that deviates from the typical virtual pet experience.
The story behind Catz unfolds as follows: a young cat lives on a magic island with friends Arvin and Ione in a small house. Arvin possesses a Magic Hat, which maintains order and peace on the island. However, an evil wolf named Ivlet disrupts the balance by stealing the Magic Hat and using its powers for chaos.
The player's character is imprisoned but later released to help restore order on the island. The Magic Hat has a mind of its own and provides advice from Beat, its feline half. Along the way, the cat learns new skills like fishing and insect catching to aid in his quest.
Catz features a "save the world" gameplay with quests, money to be earned, and shops to spend it on. The game's characters communicate through cat-like noises, while enemies' intentions are displayed above their heads. As the player progresses, they unlock new skills and sixty mini-games that can be played separately in Adventure mode.
