Bolt is based on the animated movie of the same name, starring Bolt, a dog who plays a TV show character with super powers, and his owner Penny. However, the game takes place within the fictional TV series, not following the story of the movie. The plot revolves around rescuing Penny's father from Dr. Calisto, an evil villain.
Playing through the 25 missions, control regularly switches between Bolt and Penny. Bolt's sections focus on melee combat, using super powers (limited by an energy bar) and regular attacks against multiple enemies at once.
Penny's missions are divided into platforming and stealth segments. During linear platform levels, she jumps over gaps and uses her Wheelbar to attach to ledges. When stuck, the player can activate Penny's enhanced vision to show where the Wheelbar needs to be used. In stealth sections, the goal is to reach points unseen, avoiding guards who can be taken out instantly or caught in a quick-time event. Penny also participates in hacking mini-games, controlling a probe and shooting drones.
Bolt was released on the PlayStation 3 on February 13, 2009, and is an action & adventure game.
