Treasure Co., Ltd. was established by former Konami employees led by Masato Maegawa. The studio became famous for its highly creative, technically impressive action titles on Sega platforms, such as Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy. They are widely recognized for their innovative gameplay mechanics and intense boss battles.
Following its incorporation in April 1992, the developer debuted with the licensed platformer
McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (1993) for the Mega Drive. The company quickly diversified its output across multiple console generations, partnering with publishers like Sega, Enix, and Nintendo.
On the Sega Saturn, the studio pushed 2D sprite-scaling limits with the beat 'em up
Guardian Heroes (1996) and entered the shoot 'em up genre with the critically acclaimed arcade release
Radiant Silvergun (1998). Transitioning to the Nintendo 64, they developed the side-scrolling platformer
Mischief Makers (1997) and the rail shooter
Sin and Punishment (2000).
In the 2000s, the developer achieved further success with the polarity-shifting shoot 'em up
Ikaruga (2001), which debuted in arcades before being ported to the Dreamcast and GameCube. They also maintained a strong relationship with Nintendo, producing sequels such as
Sin & Punishment: Star Successor (2009) for the Wii. Although the studio's active output declined significantly after 2010, its catalog remains highly influential in the action and shoot 'em up genres.
