On a planet called E.D.N. III, Jim Peyton is part of an expedition to mine thermal energy, a unique resource in the universe. He is separated from his wife and child for over a year, but the pay allows him to provide for his family back home. While performing his duties, he discovers an old abandoned NEVEC base and finds himself fighting Akrid species, indigenous life-forms on the planet.
The gameplay is similar to previous titles, with a focus on story-driven progression rather than mission-themed action. Battling Akrids requires patience, as boss battles require waiting for weaknesses to appear. The game progresses through completing main quests and earning bonuses from side-quests.
Thermal energy is the main resource, used as currency instead of character health. It can be gathered from Akrids and used to buy new weapons or upgrades in Jim's base. The main source of thermal energy comes from what Akrids leave behind after being killed.
The game features both 3rd and 1st-person perspectives, depending on the situation. While on foot, Jim plays in 3rd-person perspective, but when driving his rig, he is confined to 1st-person view. Upgrades can be made to the rig by exchanging parts or buying them from an arms dealer.
Side-quests can be activated by talking to NPCs around Jim's base, requiring some fighting and offering rewards such as thermal energy or combat upgrades. On foot, Jim can also fix broken machine-gun turrets and repair his damaged rig.
Jim often sends video messages to his wife, providing background information about the protagonist. The game features limited ammo for two other weapons besides the pistol with infinite ammo.
