Sonic the Hedgehog is the first of many games starring Sega's premier hedgehog, Sonic. It's a side-scrolling platform game with a difference: speed. Sonic rushes through levels with incredible speed, allowing him to traverse loops and jumps with ease.
The story is about Dr. Robotnik capturing Sonic's animal friends and trapping them inside robots. To free his friends, Sonic must destroy the robots using his spin attack. Meanwhile, Dr. Robotnik wants to control the chaos emeralds, which Sonic needs to stop him in 3D rotating bonus levels.
The gameplay revolves around collecting rings while avoiding enemies. If Sonic is hit by an enemy, all the rings he's carrying scatter, and he must quickly grab them back before they disappear. Collecting 100 rings gives Sonic an extra life, and there's also an invincibility bonus that protects him from attacks.
The game consists of several "zones", each containing three levels. At the end of each zone, Sonic faces off against Dr. Robotnik in a boss fight, which serves as a conclusion to the level.
Sonic the Hedgehog was released on the PlayStation 3 on March 23, 2007, and is an action-adventure game within its genre.
