Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set just after the events of the first game, where Sonic returns from vacation to find that his friends Tails and the other animals are missing. A letter from Tails reveals that Dr Robotnik has captured all the animals and is holding him in a place called the Crystal Egg. To free Tails, Sonic must find and collect the six Chaos Emeralds.

The gameplay of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 takes a different turn compared to its Genesis counterpart. Without Tails' assistance, players must rely on Sonic's speed and agility alone to overcome obstacles and defeat Robotnik's robots. The game features new zones with challenging terrain, including water levels that require precise jumping to navigate.
