Thumper is a fast-paced game where you control a futuristic space beetle racing on a track floating in a void. The player must use rhythm-based input to progress and prevent crashes, moving through levels and defeating a giant head several times. The controls are limited to four directions and a single button, which are used in different combinations to overcome obstacles. The beetle moves forward automatically, and the speed cannot be controlled. Only a single lane is available at first, but later levels have multiple ones.
The gameplay requires quick reflexes and timing as you navigate through levels and defeat obstacles. Holding the button allows the beetle to float and burst through barriers, while combining it with an upwards motion enables the beetle to break through hoops. These actions often need to be performed in quick succession as combos. The game also features a soundtrack that changes based on your performance, with added elements activated when obstacles are cleared successfully.
The game is divided into sections, each with its own score and ranking system. After completing a section, the player is shown their progress, and there are boss fights that require looping a sequence until it's completed entirely. There are nine main levels in total, with 20 sections for each one, linked together as a single sequence. The game has unlimited lives, and optional elements can be collected for a high score.
