Mortal Kombat was set on an ancient and mysterious island where an evil sorcerer named Shang Tsung had corrupted a centuries-old Shaolin fighting tournament. Shang Tsung had entered Prince Goro, a four-armed warrior from the Shokan race, into the tournament to win ten consecutive times, ensuring the Earth Realm would fall into darkness.
However, Raiden, the Thunder God and protector of the Earth Realm, intervened with a plan to tip the scales in favor of the humans. Seven fighters stepped into the arena: Liu Kang, a Shaolin warrior; Sonya Blade, a Special Forces operative; Kano, a mercenary thug; Johnny Cage, a fame-seeking actor; Sub-Zero, an ice-wielding warrior; Scorpion, his undead adversary; and Raiden himself.
Mortal Kombat is a side-scrolling fighting game where players engage in one-on-one combat, performing punches, kicks, and special moves to defeat their opponent. When the opponent loses twice, the winner can perform a "Fatality" on the loser, a move unique to each fighter that graphically kills the loser in a bloody finale.
The game originated as a 2-player arcade title, notable for its use of digitized actors and copious amounts of blood during gameplay.
