The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in action, and it's up to the players to rescue their friends and take down their enemies. April O'Neil is being held hostage by The Shredder's thugs, and the turtles must come to her aid. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an action-packed adventure that lets players control all four turtle heroes - Leonardo, Michaelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael. With the ability to swap between turtles at any time, players can switch tactics on the fly. When a turtle is lost, he becomes "captured" and can't be used again until he's rescued from a hidden location.

The gameplay is divided into two perspectives: a top-down view for exploration and side-scrolling battles. In addition to each turtle's main weapon, players can acquire sub-weapons like shuriken, which have limited uses.
