Crash Tag Team Racing begins with Ebeneezer von Clutch, owner of MotorWorld, having his life force maintained by the Black Power Gem stolen. He seeks revenge and calls upon Crash and friends to recover the gem and catch the thief.

The gameplay in Crash Tag Team Racing is similar to other racing games in the series. Players can choose from a variety of characters, including allies and enemies from previous titles, as well as new additions. A unique feature introduced in this game is the "clash" ability, which allows two racers to merge into a hybrid vehicle, working together to destroy opponents.
