After their escape from the Templars, the modern-day Assassins, including Desmond Miles, seek refuge in modern-day Monteriggioni, a historical site that has been preserved. There, they set up the Animus for Desmond to explore Ezio's past and uncover more about the Pieces of Eden.
Ezio's story begins immediately after the end of Assassin's Creed II, where he leaves Rome to head back to Monteriggioni. However, his journey is ambushed, and the Piece of Eden he found is stolen. He must return to Rome, rescue its people, and recover what has been lost.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood continues Ezio's story, where players take on the role of Ezio as they use their assassin skills to liberate Rome from the Templars' influence. Players complete missions to progress the story, earn money, and free areas of Rome from Borgia control. By burning down the thirteen Borgia towers, Ezio can reclaim lost territories and restore Roman landmarks.
New to the series is a multiplayer component. In this mode, Abstergo recruits use Animus devices to train themselves to become Assassins. Players take on the role of an Abstergo recruit, assassinating targets while being tracked by Templar agents. Earning points allows players to level up and upgrade their character's skills.
The Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Windows version includes two bonus maps: The Trajan Market and The Aquaduct, available on both Steam and the retail package.
