Saw is a first-person action-adventure game based on the popular movie franchise of the same name. The player takes on the role of former detective David Tapp, who has been locked in an abandoned asylum by the Jigsaw Killer. Tapp's primary goal is to explore the building and find an exit while avoiding or solving Jigsaw's traps and puzzles.
Upon starting the game, Tapp is faced with the task of removing a trap known as the Reverse Bear Trap, which threatens to tear his head apart. As he navigates the mental institution, Tapp must contend with obstacles such as shotgun doors, broken glass, and other victims of Jigsaw who are after him. The player must uncover mysteries from the films, meet different characters, and see recreated sets from the movies.
Tapp's actions have a significant impact on the game's outcome. If he is not careful, innocents may be killed, and some wandering the halls are not violent. Killing them affects the game's outcome, as well as Tapp's ability to save others from certain traps. The game has two endings: a positive ending that is canon to the films, and a negative ending that is not.
Players control Tapp from a third-person perspective, with a combat mechanism similar to Silent Hill: Homecoming. He can use various weapons in the environments, but they will break after being used a few times. Enemies have traps that may affect their skills, such as those with square-shaped traps on their head or dynamite strapped to their hands.
Traps can be used against enemies as well, such as fuse boxes that electrocute anyone who steps in them. As the player progresses through the game, new kinds of traps and weapons are introduced, including light sources and the ability to create new traps or weapons from junk around the asylum. Some larger traps require Tapp to save both his own life and another person's life, while others force him to make a difficult decision.
The game rewards the player for finding clues and documents strewn around the Asylum, and in many cases, Tapp will not be able to escape a trap without their help. The game's puzzles are often complex and require careful observation and problem-solving skills.
