Spec Ops: The Line is a military third-person shooter set in Dubai after a sandstorm has ravaged the environment. A series of events unfold as Colonel John Konrad, who volunteered to lead the evacuation mission six months prior, contacts his team with disturbing news. A team of three men - Captain Martin Walker, Lieutenant Adams, and Sergeant Lugo - are tasked with locating survivors, escaping the city immediately, and sending for backup from outside the storm wall. The player only controls Walker, while the others are controlled by AI.
The game's story draws inspiration from Heart of Darkness and features a mix of shooting, tactical maneuvers, and cover-based gameplay. Players must employ squad-based tactics combined with combat to progress through missions. The overall narrative focuses on the moral dilemma of evacuating survivors while being attacked by insurgents who fear American soldiers.
The game's mechanics include seeking cover, aiming from behind obstacles, vaulting, sprinting, and taking out insurgents. Team members can be given orders, such as engaging a specific target or moving to an area, but their actions are also influenced by the AI. Players can access various weapons, melee attacks, and executions, including mortars and static turrets. Health is regenerated automatically by staying behind cover.
The environment plays a crucial role in gameplay, with obstacles, sandstorms, and sunshine influencing the game world. Objects can be used for alternate attacks, such as shooting roofs or targeting windows to rain down glass on opponents. The game features linear corridor design, scripted sequences, and encounters that unfold into engagements. Interactions between squad members are a significant aspect of the game, often focusing on moral dilemmas and conversations.
Multiplayer modes include Chaos and Mutiny , with two factions - The Exiles and The Damned - each with unique classes and customization options. Players can unlock up to five classes, each with different weapons and items, and a persistent statistics system tracks progress over games.
The game features 15 chapters in single-player mode and various multiplayer modes, including Rally Point , Uplink , and Buried . The latter involves protecting repairable points on the map while taking out enemy weak spots. Game modes are available through playlists, such as Combat and Attrition .
Spec Ops: The Line was released for the Xbox 360 on June 29, 2012.
