Driver '76 , the fifth installment in the Driver series, was released in 2007 and marks the first time Ubisoft acquired the license from Atari. The game is set two years before the events of Driver: Parallel Lines, following Ray as he tries to impress a Triad boss by taking on tough jobs, which gets him into trouble with other gangs.
The game features 27 missions, set in various districts across New York and New Jersey, with over 40 customizable vehicles. Players have complete freedom to move about, but the mission structure is linear, consisting of time-limited runs, escorting, and evading missions. Ray can also move on foot and engage in combat using various guns.
Throughout the game, players can accept side jobs to earn additional cash, such as closed-course or open-road racing, driving a tow-truck or taxi, and money can be spent in the garage to upgrade vehicles. Players can also participate in multiplayer modes for up to 2 players via WiFi, including Street Racing, Carnage, Circuit Racing, Pink Slip Racing, and Swap Meet.
Additionally, players can swap items over W-Lan or download new paint jobs. The game includes a few minigames, offering additional gameplay options.
